Strategic Thinking Tips - 5 Commandments For Entrepreneurs, Business Owners, and Wealth ArchitectsStrategic Thinking Tips - 5 Commandments For Entrepreneurs, Business Owners, and Wealth Architects By Gogo Erekosima Strategic thinking is the process and act of thinking that enables the design, planning and implementation of large scale operations or projects. It is a skill and a discipline you must master if you hope to climb to the top of your marketplace or to the pinnacle of your career. While there is a lot of scholarship on the analytical skills and tools required to become an effective strategic thinker, I find that instruction on how to develop the orientation or habit of being such a thinker is often lacking. The following 4 rules were initially developed for the use of my consulting clients and associates, and we have found that they can help virtually anyone intuitively understand what it means to be a strategic thinker. 1. You must be an intentional collector of ideas You have to learn to collect case studies, examples and stories from which to cross-pollinate ideas and insights. This is one of the best ways to consistently generate new and innovative ideas, whether these ideas are related to your business or your personal life. 2. You must systematically set aside time for big picture strategy Bill Gates has is famous (or infamous) "think week". Thomas Edison and at least 3 other industry titans regular gathered in Western Maryland for a retreat and creative mastermind sessions. You have to set aside regular intervals where you strategically plan your life and your business directions. 3. You must create an information organization system This particular rule is related to the first one. If you are to become a collector of ideas, you must become an organizer of information. This is made much easier by today's technology. In addition to obvious technology tools, you may elect to create a website or blog where you store your information as well as your own developing thoughts and frameworks. Unless you have a particular fear of Google, you can use their free "Google sites" service to create private websites for storing your information. Of course when in doubt, the old fashioned home library, shelves and drawers are great for storing books and files. 4. You must develop a platform for teaching and expressing new ideas The research shows that true learning occurs as you interact with information you receive. One of the best ways to interact with incoming knowledge is to teach it (or attempt to). Trying to communicate new information helps you to analyze new concepts and contend with it in your own way. At the very least, you can develop broadcast platforms like blogs, websites, talks, books and articles. On the higher end of the scale, you may think about consulting, establishing a business, or getting into the formal education sector. 5. You must be a collector of people Although the popular view of strategic thinking evokes an image of the solitary thinker, some of the most powerful creative and analytical breakthroughs take place in a group context. Create an informal board of advisers for your business, or even a formal or informal mastermind group for tackling your favorite subjects.
