MLM Training Tip - 3 Phases of Being an Entrepreneur

Starting a business can be a split second decision. In fact you may have started a business without even realizing it. You decide to make a little extra income and signed up with someone for a new MLM home based business. Guess what, you have started a business. You have started along the path of an entrepreneur. You start out as the salesperson, then move to be a coach and final a mentor. Each phase takes a conscience decision to move from one phase to another.

Phase One: The Salesperson

Most entrepreneurs do not leave this phase. Small businesses, franchises and "Mom and Pop" shops where the owner does everything. You are starting your new online MLM business so of course you are doing everything to save money. You are a salesperson. Each sale is depended on you and your efforts. You write the sales copy, answer emails, answer the phone and write the checks. This keeps the cost of the business as low as possible. You are most likely starting this business while you are holding another job so money is tight. The key point with this phase is everything revolves around you. You stop working your business dies. Vacations and time off are limited to long weekends or time spent in the hotel with your laptop. After a while you start making some money and realize that your time is better spent on higher revenue making activities. That is when you move to the Phase Two, the coach.

Phase Two: The Coach

Coach delegates some of his or her activities to someone else to do. This can be someone hired for your office or a virtual assistant. In this phase you are coaching the employee or VA in the activities. You are not really letting go of the responsibility. You should write out procedures for each task you want done and how you want it done and then give that procedure to the person. In this phase you still check up to see that the task gets done and the way you want it done. This phase will allow you to take a little longer time off, as much as 4 to 5 days, but the business still depends on you. You are closing the sales or signing up new recruits to your MLM opportunity. As you work with people in your organization and develop relationship you will move into the third and final phase, mentor.

Phase Three: The Mentor

In this phase you hire people for a job description. The hires no longer are doing individual tasks laid out by you, but are doing many task associated with one aspect of your business. For example you hire a marketing manager. His or her job is to oversee all the marketing for your company. They are responsible for getting new sales copy, posting in the right places, track results and make adjustments to the marketing when needed. You are acting as more of a mentor to the person. Someone else will put together the ideas and you will approve them. You are not responsible for getting it done. You do not have to worry about it. You have people who will worry about it. This is the ultimate phase because it leaves you to work on your business, above it, not in your business. You give the vision to the business and others will implement it. You know you are in this phase when you can walk away from the business for more than a month and it will still continue to grow.

Everyone who starts a MLM Home Based Business will go through these three phases if they want to achieve a business that will eventually run on autopilot. You start small with you at the center, you branch out with one or two employees and final bloom into a true business with employees with job descriptions that are responsible for different aspects of the business: sales, marketing, finances. The ultimate goal is to have the business work for you not you work for the company.
