As most people don't know everything about what they want without being informed, it's likely that your target market will use search engines. SEO (search engine optimisation) is the practice that allows your website to effectively react to a users search. By acquiring a high search engine rank, you can ensure that your service will be seen before others and by providing the user with a relevant response to their query; it is more likely that they will consider you capable of giving them what they want.

SEO involves making websites and their content as accessible and relevant as possible so that when crawlers scour the web for new information, they can easily locate everything that your website has to offer. Search engines employ constantly changing algorithms which find and evaluate the worthiness of websites and although the weight that different elements carry is subject to change, relevance and reputation are likely determinants of your website's ranking.

In order to ensure that your website will be considered relevant, keywords tailored to your service/industry are embedded within content as a means of ensuring that a positive association with the users query is formed. A balance is needed between pleasing the crawlers and maintaining a high standard of content as if abused, common features of SEO (such as keyword density) can have a detrimental effect on a search engine's assessment.

SEO is often a long term process requiring extensive periods of research and monitoring of the popularity and performance of keywords. This means that unless companies have an in house internet marketing team, specialised SEO firms are employed to monitor changes and find keywords that are the most likely to result in the highest return on investment. In terms of competition, it is often good for companies to specialise their content to the highest degree possible without alienating other potential clients/customers as it is often possible to achieve success via the targeting of a niche group who are known to be in a need of a specific service and are thus, more likely to follow through on purchase.

Relevance is a necessity that is also measured by reputation (or 'trust' and its deciding elements). Links operate at the level of recommendations and vary in status and weight. Search engines put a lot of stead in the quality of incoming links, with a website's page rank being the signalling factor of the quality of its recommendation. A lower level of high PR links is generally favoured over an easily obtained mass of low quality links.

In order get the most out of an SEO campaign, all factors of a service's reach and intentions need to be analysed and planned. From here, Quality SEO can be the difference between gaining the edge in an industry and being buried by those who use it to its potential.
