5 Important Aspects of Successful Internet Marketing

Starting an online business is just the first step to success. If no one knows that you exist, how can you expect to make any sales? It doesn't matter if you are selling products or knowledge -- it is up to you to spread the word, and while some aspects of Internet marketing are identical to the familiar patterns of the real world, others are very different. Make sure you target the following 5 points in order to build a successful marketing plan.

Make use of Social Media

Social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter offer you a way to get in contact with your potential audience which isn't, strictly, business. Develop an easy, less formal style and start a thread that is all about your niche. If you are selling running supplies, friend people who list running as a hobby. If you are trying to sell business plans to newbies, search for people with an interest in entrepreneurship. Show that you are well-versed in your field and when you suggest a particular product, people will naturally want to acquire it. Be sure to check the rules and regulations for each social media site regarding promotional efforts, though; you don't want to be booted off for careless errors.

Become the Face of Your Business

Make good use of YouTube to upload simple or even professional level marketing videos. By putting a face to your business you become more approachable. Additionally, you are offering your information in an alternate format. Not everyone absorbs material well by reading it. With an increasingly visual society, videos are absolutely essential.

Affiliate Marketing

Finding affiliate marketing plans is easy; just enter a search for the term. The goal is to place your information on the web page of another, related business. For example, if you sell custom made chocolates for wedding favors, you might want to establish an affiliate relationship with a website that produces wedding invitations. There are many ways to arrange payment, but most of the time you only pay your affiliate if you actually make a sale. Best of all, there is very little work in this kind of marketing, since processing is built in when you set up your agreement.

Start an Email List Immediately

When you sell online you should expect that most of your marketing will be online as well. Obtaining email addresses is critical if you want to keep potential customers in your network. In order to convince people to give you their email addresses you will need to offer something of value.

Let's say you are marketing a book online. You could offer the first three chapters free for download in exchange for an email address. If they want the rest of the book, customers either have to pay or have to provide more information. If you are selling a concrete product, offer a discount, early notification of an upcoming sale or informative newsletters.

Article Writing and Blogging

Perhaps the best way to get people to your website is to establish your credentials online. Some of the simplest ways to do this is to publish web-based articles and maintain a blog on your topic or niche. It doesn't matter if you are not a proficient writer, hire someone who is. The goal is to get your name and web address all over the Internet.

Each article database has slightly different criteria for publication so make sure you read them carefully. If you hire someone to write for you, establish standards immediately. Blogs must be maintained several times a week, and articles should be cross referenced, tagged and linked.

Internet marketing takes some work, but failing to market is one of the biggest reasons for failure. If you don't know how to form a cohesive marketing plan, take a class, get a mentor, hire a professional firm or read a book; the payoff is more than worth your time.
